How to adjust the applications to the screen of your Android mobile

How to adjust the applications to the screen of your Android mobile

That mobile screens have changed in recent years is something that can be seen with the naked eye: the size that now seems normal, a few years ago we would have been surprised to be gigantic. Not only that, there is another physical aspect that has evolved on the screens: their ratio or aspect ratio.

It is not the same to have a screen of 6 inches (diagonal) and 19: 9 (ratio) that have a panel with identical diagonal and that its screen is 21: 9. Apart from the fact that the dimensions of the phone will vary, and with it the comfort when holding and using it, there is an inconvenience that application developers suffer daily: that their apps adapt correctly to the aspect ratio of the screen.

Android has such an amalgamation of manufacturers, screen types, ratios, diagonals ... that it is impossible to develop an application and that it is perfectly visible on all phones. Therefore, there will always be mobiles that, when starting an app or game, have to include black bands to adapt the interface to the aspect ratio of the screen. Or what is worse: sometimes the interface fades; resulting in bad user experience.

How to correct these display problems?

Android provides various tools that should be known. We will go step by step so you can correctly adjust your applications to the phone screen.

With the arrival of the elongated screen ratios, most manufacturers introduced an option within the settings to adapt the applications to different aspect ratios. It is very simple to modify, you just have to do the following:

  • Access your mobile settings and enter the Screen options.
  • Look for something like Application Scaling or Full-Screen Applications. The name may vary.
  • Choose which applications will run taking advantage of the entire screen size. It is best to mark those that are not adapted. You can also activate them all and make sure they will look good.

Although you can do it directly from the previous settings, it is likely that when you start an application that is not optimized, you have encountered a message at the bottom of the screen saying something like a Fit application to full size. Pressing there the scaling is done from the execution of the app.

Reduce or enlarge the screen content

You can make the interface of the applications (and the system) larger or smaller; a change that will allow the application to adapt better to the aspect ratio thus eliminating the effect of having messy icons and menus on the screen. Its use is very simple:

  • Enter the settings of your Android and go to Screen.
  • Go to the options to adjust the screen size or content.
  • Set the selector to the size you want: to the smallest left; to the larger right. All screen elements will graduate accordingly, including applications.

This is very effective for those apps and games that are not provided: by varying the size of the content you get the application to fit better in the available dimensions and ratio. It is convenient to use it if with the scaling of applications you did not solve the problem: make sure that the app is completely visualized and nothing is left out of the screen.

Force a different screen density from developer settings

In the event that by varying the size of the content the application continues to look bad, you can always try to force the screen density. With this you get that the content of the applications is more or less large, everything will depend on the number you dial. If the interface is not seen correctly because the elements fade, making a change in density can make these elements better fit the available space.

To force a change in screen density you must do the following:

  • Go to your Android settings and look for system options.
  • Enter the phone information.
  • Click on "Build number" 10 times. You will see that the developer options are activated (you may need to enter the phone password).
  • Enter the developer options and look for the setting marked "Smaller Width". This is the pixel density at which your phone is working. It is important that you write down the current number.
  • To make the screen content bigger you just have to reduce the density number. In our case it is 470, so we can put it in 400, for example. Go slowly checking the result until you see the applications as you wish.
  • To make the screen smaller you have to do the opposite, increase the density number. You must go slowly until you adjust the content correctly.
  • You should keep in mind that the interface, applications and/or screen elements may not be well resized to the density you have chosen. The only way to adjust everything correctly is to perform trial/error tests.
  • To return to the original density you only need to write the default value in the "Smaller Width" setting. You can also go to the screen settings and enter the content size options.

Varying the density of the screen does not entail risks beyond losing a correct display if you go over the number; however much it is enough to write the original density to reverse the change. As we always say, test and adapt your mobile to your liking: Android is the best at it.
